I'm using 4.0.4 for both Windows and Linux. All I did was download
the 4.0.4 source zip (from http://download.zeromq.org/), and open the
project under builds/msvc/ in Visual Studio 2015. VS2015 happily
converted it and it built fine.

I link statically, so I chose the static release build. I had to be
sure to define ZMQ_STATIC when compiling my application. But it
builds, links, and runs happily.
