Okay...
Given the API was really horrible for language bindings -- other then
the C family -- I see this change as quite important.

I'd say we see what comments the next days will bring.
If this breaks a lot of applications, we can revert the patch and
introduce a new API.

Bringing this even further I'd like to recommend that the old API should
be marked as deprecated even in the comming stable 3.2.x releases.

Now back to that great man page...
