just a note on documenting flows - the zguide is very good anyway

in a different project I found it convenient to explain interactions between several entities over time with the help of Message Sequence Charts

there is a little-known utility 'mscgen' which translates an MSC diagram in text notation into PNG, SVG, EPS and image maps
