The IPC transport is unchanged in 3.x, and it's about the same speed
as local TCP. Inproc is faster, especially on larger messages since
there's no copying.

It should be possible IMO to do memory-mapped IPC that would cut out
the kernel; no-one's spent time investigating this though.
