In fact cppzmq is apparently used, but doesn't change because it's
fairly complete.

You can certainly experiment with this; my usual approach to a new
project is to make a minimal working proof, see if people like it, and
open the door to contributions. If you are solving an interesting
problem, properly, people will join you. If not, they'll ignore you.
