It's not great. Martin has an experimental design for a GENERIC socket
that issues events when peers arrive and leave, which is the right
solution to this problem.
Maybe someone wants to try backporting that to the 3.1 branch. It
would be really awesome. (Just don't call it ROUTER pretty please).
