Indeed. Any bundled dependency is a Bad Idea for packaging reasons,
and because we create risk that we can't properly manage.

Happily it's now easier than ever to rip stuff out that we don't like.
0MQ used to have a bizarre dependency on an XML parser, and it took
quite a lot of discussion to remove that.

I'm going to modify the contribution guidelines to warn against
creating bundled dependencies.
