You're not the only one thinking this... Guido Goldstein (afair) has
also been working an MDP server and client that aren't based on the C
version's design.

There are some improvements to make to the MDP protocol, especially
wrt heartbeating. The HUGZ design in the Clustered Hashmap Protocol
works better IMO.
