Unfortunately the backport fails. Not in scope for 2.1.6 thus.

Martin, any chance you can patch & test this change on the 2.1 branch?
Otherwise we're not going to be able to offer this patch to 2.x users
IMO.

I've ported the test pub and sub back to 2.1, they're attached. If you
need my patched dist.cpp and dist.hpp, I've saved them but presumably
that's not worth much.
