Then it must have been an older Debian.  Nonetheless it impossible to
continue and we had to switch to ... ugh... RedHat.

Which means at least the Java bindings and presumably also others.

I recall Steve asking the same question about autoconf some time ago:
do we really need 2.61?  Anything that raises the barrier on building
0MQ is a problem.
