Please separate --enable-debug from --disable-shared.
The only difference is you having to type:
./configure --enable-debug --disable-shared
vs.
./configure --enable-debug
(which magically disables shared libraries)
I don't like the latter since some people do want to build shared
libraries with full debugging info, so --enable-debug should not touch
that. For example, anyone debugging bindings will likely be using shared
libraries.
FWIW, the "scripts that launch something else" are a libtool artifact, if
you poke around in .libs/ you can find the proper exectuables.
