I think the rule of thumb is that it's possible but not recommended.
There is a command that'll do that (git filter-branch --env-filter, I
think)...but if you do that, you'll end up creating a completely
separate, new branch with the “correct” history, and everyone's existing
branch pointers will be trashed.
